This species of plant was officially selected as California’s state flower in 1903. It’s golden blooms were deemed a fitting symbol for the Golden state. The petals close up at night, or in cold, windy weather, and then reopen in the warmth of the morning sun. The color becomes almost neon with the sun shining through. Eric used an old tube of Cadmium Orange to try and capture that glow.
